Plain bushings (also referred to as journals) are used in applications where space is at a premium and the requirements for a rolling element bearing are not required. There are several types of plain bushings/journal bearings available on the open market. These are as follows.

• Wrapped metal bushings and thrust washers with steel or bronze backing in plain and flanged formats. These bearings can have either a PTFE/Lead matrix (D type) or an acetal type (X type) liner which provide the mechanism of lubricating whilst supporting load.
• PTFE lined metal backed bushings in plain and flanged formats. These also include MIL-SPEC (M81934/1 & M819034/2) plain and flanged lined bushings as used on many aircraft and military applications. The metal backing is usually an alloy of steel or aluminium although other types are possible.
• Special bushings made from alloyed metals for use in high load/higher speed/higher temperature or high contamination environments where performance still has to be achieved. Plastics and Carbon materials can also be used in bushing applications for applications where high contamination or very high temperature or anti static properties are required.
